Augmented Reality (AR) is a technology that seamlessly integrates digital content such as images, text or 3D models into our real environment. This fusion of the physical and virtual world offers countless application possibilities that can revolutionize our lives. Prof. Dr. Ansgar Gerlicher from the Stuttgart Media University takes on the challenge and explains in 42 seconds what AR exactly is and how this technology can change our lives.
In medicine, for example, AR can support the hearing impaired by providing visual cues such as subtitles or interactive instructions to make conversations or important information in the environment easier to understand. The visually impaired could navigate more safely using AR devices, as obstacles are detected and communicated via acoustic or haptic signals.
AR is also increasingly being used in surgery: surgeons can use AR glasses to see important data such as CT or MRI images directly in their field of vision during operations, which increases precision and safety. AR is also ideal for helping patients understand complex medical issues, for example through virtual representations of organs or disease processes.
But the potential uses of AR extend far beyond medicine. The technology is already being used in architecture, education and industry to simplify processes, convey knowledge interactively and increase efficiency. AR has the potential to break down barriers, make life easier for many people and fundamentally change the way we interact with the world.
