The BioRegion STAR with the regions of Stuttgart and Neckar-Alb and the cities of Tübingen and Reutlingen, famous worldwide for their automobile manufacturers, is also home to numerous medium-sized medical and biotechnology companies. The combination of established family businesses, “hidden champions”, and young companies is a key feature of the cluster. Another outstanding and future-oriented feature is the geographical proximity of engineering-driven medium-sized companies and companies from the biotechnology and medical technology sectors.

The companies in the STERN BioRegion benefit from the large number of scientific institutions that conduct research in biotechnology and medical technology. From the Stuttgart region, these include the Universities of Stuttgart and Hohenheim, the Esslingen University of Applied Sciences, the Fraunhofer Institutes for Production Engineering and Automation (IPA) and for Interfacial Engineering and Bioprocess Engineering (IGB), the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems, and the German Institutes for Textile and Fiber Research (DITF) Denkendorf.
