The mission statement was developed in a participatory process by the regional institutions together with institutions, companies, universities, municipalities and districts in the Stuttgart region and was approved by the regional parliament in July 2013.
Sustainability theses for the Stuttgart region as a business and science location
As part of its planning and innovation policy options, the Stuttgart region wants to work towards decarbonized, regenerative and circular-based regional value creation. The following theses serve as a basis for this.
1) The ecological modernization of the economy requires international cooperation, freedom and peaceful coexistence
The Stuttgart region is closely linked internationally and maintains partnerships with many regions around the world. In our responsibility for a good future, we are not only committed to a sustainable, climate-neutral world of tomorrow, but above all to a free and peaceful coexistence.
2) The aim is to maintain the strong position, stability, value creation and prosperity of the Stuttgart region in the long term.
We use our diverse opportunities to give future generations their own creative freedom. This can be ensured through a willingness to change today. We are prepared to take unknown and uncomfortable paths to achieve this. As a model region for ecological modernization, we provide inspiration and advocate for a social and sustainable transformation of the economy.
3) An intact environment is the basis for prosperity and quality of life. The ecological modernization of the economy offers the opportunity to harmonize economy and ecology.
Experience, pioneering spirit, intellect and creativity have always contributed to our success. Now we are working with exactly these principles in the Stuttgart region for a sustainable, climate-neutral world of tomorrow.
4) Ecological modernization is seen as a driver of innovation. It is the prerequisite for future viability, competitiveness, high-quality employment and resilience in the Stuttgart region.
Sustainable transformation relies on ingenuity and new technologies. Space for entrepreneurial experimentation and constant learning as well as reliable working conditions for employees are the fundamental basis for harnessing the potential of change for the Stuttgart region.
5) The global need for sustainable transformation is being actively addressed in the Stuttgart region. The goal is a climate-neutral and environmentally compatible way of doing business.
As a successful and innovative industrial region, we recognize this responsibility. Our companies are so successful on global markets because they and their products stand for innovation, quality and reliability. This should also apply to their ecological compatibility.
6) The process of sustainable development must be designed in a socially responsible manner.
We advocate fair social conditions and good work as well as equal opportunities and participation. Sustainable transformation gives people in their different life situations opportunities and space to develop their life plans.
7) Economic development and prosperity should also be assessed qualitatively - it is not about a simple “more”, but also about “better”.
The social and environmental costs of economic activity must be taken into account. Economic activity does not only cause business costs and values. Impacts on society and the environment must be taken into account when making decisions.
8) The change towards a regenerative circular economy should be supported.
A way of doing business that deprives itself of its own basis in the long term is unsustainable. This applies to individual companies as well as to regions and economies. A regenerative circular economy offers the potential to close material and energy cycles and at the same time strengthen regional synergies, independence and value creation of companies.
9) Scientific competence in the region will be used to an even greater extent for the transformation of the economy and implemented in entrepreneurial and social activities.
Cooperation is essential for shared success. Our regional networks promote the development of ideas, concepts and their implementation. Transdisciplinary, cross-sector exchange in and between business and science is essential for a successful, ecological modernization of the economy.
The theses were approved in the Regional Parliament's Committee for Economy, Infrastructure and Administration on March 16, 2022.
