In the upper Filstal, in a wonderfully scenic location, only 25 km from Göppingen, lies the small community of Drackenstein. With its two districts, Ober- and Unterdrackenstein, the community has a rich history and an intact infrastructure.
For a long time purely agricultural, companies settled in the area in the 60s, but these did not change the idyllic character.
The first documented mention can be found in a chronicle of the Zwiefalten monastery from 1137. Worth seeing are the 15th century parish church of St. Archangel Michael, located high on a tuff rock in Unterdrackenstein, and the neo-Gothic Lady Chapel in Oberdrackenstein, built in 1853.
The wildly romantic surroundings with grottos and waterfalls invite you to discover and linger and are the home of Drackenstein's heraldic animal, the dragon. Even as a car driver passing through, you can experience the charming landscape on one of the most beautiful, almost alpine-looking motorway sections in Germany, which has led directly past Drackenstein since 1936.
