Besigheim - with its 10.250 inhabitants - has developed from a small wine-growing community into a modern city that now also has trade and industry. All educational facilities are available on site, as are facilities for cultural events, sports and leisure activities. The city's municipal work focuses on the renovation of the city center and the development of new residential building land and commercial areas.
With its mighty castle complex, Besigheim also presents itself as an attractive historical town. As was the case many hundreds of years ago, the cityscape is impressively shaped by the Upper and Lower Castles with their Hohenstaufen towers, the round tower and the Waldhorn tower. Today's town hall with the wine press area, the former fruit box and the old wine press were once among the farm buildings of the Lower Castle. The medieval town, which is still walled today, stretches between the two castle complexes. A whole series of half-timbered houses in the old town center bear witness to Besigheim's bourgeois past, including the high-gabled town hall, which was built in 1459 as a department store.
