Marbach am Neckar is beautifully situated on the right steep bank of the Neckar between vineyards and orchards, 20 km north of Stuttgart. It is a lively residential community with a wide range of shopping and services. The carefully restored old town with its walls and towers, its romantic alleys, picturesque half-timbered houses and fountains offers a wealth of delightful motifs.
At the turn of the century, agriculture and trade were still the main sources of income for the Marbach population. After the introduction of freedom of trade in 1862, industry also found its way into Marbach and a considerable leather and furniture industry developed, which has recently been joined by metal and plastic processing companies and an internationally renowned seed breeding company.
The city is a station on the Ludwigsburg – Backnang federal railway line, has a direct S-Bahn connection to Stuttgart and is connected to Ludwigsburg and Heilbronn by buses. The federal motorway A 81 Stuttgart – Heilbronn is only 5 km away. From May to October you can travel with Neckar passenger ships from Marbach to Stuttgart and Besigheim.
The Schiller National Museum, the largest literary museum in the Federal Republic, and the German Literature Archive are institutions of the German Schiller Society that enjoy a worldwide reputation.
Marbach am Neckar is the birthplace of Friedrich Schiller, who was born here in 1759, and of the astronomer and mathematician Tobias Mayer (1723-1762).
