The town of Lauterstein, newly formed from the former town of Weißenstein and the municipality of Nenningen as part of the administrative reform on January 1, 1974, currently has 2.900 inhabitants. Since there are only a few larger commercial businesses on site, almost all employees commute towards Filstal and the children also attend secondary schools in the area.
Lauterstein attaches particular importance to maintaining a livable environment and sees its task as offering a local recreation area for the densely populated Göppingen area. The seemingly endless forest areas in the northeastern part of the 2.332 hectare area, the wonderful viewpoints from the mountains that directly surround Lauterstein, which is embedded in a narrow valley, and the picturesque and legendary Christental with the reservoir there are ideal for relaxation in the great outdoors.
A good restaurant offers excursionists and hikers not only the wonderful landscape but also a lot for their physical well-being.
