The Stuttgart Region has excellent links to the German motorway and European high-speed rail networks. Some 12 million people live within a 100-kilometre radius of the city. Beginning in 2006, Stuttgart 21 is a joint initiative between the German national rail operator, Deutsche Bahn, and the City of Stuttgart. The aim is to upgrade Stuttgart’s main station and rail infrastructure, and free up some 100 hectares of land for urban development. The project will also connect the new state exhibition centre – currently under construction near the international airport – to the German rail network.
Around 7.6 million passengers and over 65,000 metric tons of freight pass through Stuttgart’s international airport every year. The facility not only provides rapid links to the economic centres of Germany, but also to major cities in Europe and overseas. Flights depart regularly to over 120 destinations in more than 40 countries.
The backbone of the region’s highly effective public transport system is its rail network. The suburban railway infrastructure (S-Bahn) alone accounts for some 348 kilometres of track, with 70 stations. These are supplemented by the tram network (U-Bahn), and several thousand bus stops. | |
