HISTORY

The history of the Stuttgart Region as an administrative entity goes back to 1974, when the mid-Neckar association of local authorities was founded. This later merged with its counterpart in Stuttgart to form the Verband Region Stuttgart. Preparations for the foundation of the Verband began in 1991, with a number of regional conferences involving all relevant players. On 7 February 1994, the parliament of the state of Baden-Württemberg (Landtag) passed a bill to enhance collaboration within the Stuttgart Region, and establish the Verband Region Stuttgart. The first direct elections for the regional assembly were held the following June, and the Verband officially came into being on 19 October 1994. The WRS was created in August 1995, and fulfils the Verband’s statutory task of promoting economic development in the region.
